About the Author

David Cutler teaches history and journalism at Brimmer and May School in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where he advises The Gator, the student news site. He leads the Private School Journalism Association, which supports student publications at private and independent schools.

His education writing has appeared in Edutopia, PBS NewsHour, HuffPost, and publications of the National Association of Independent Schools. He received the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s Gold Key in 2026.

The Next Book

My next book explores how teachers can help students see the value in what they learn and apply it beyond an assignment or test. I want to build on fresh classroom material to make a deeper argument about purpose and application: how students connect knowledge and skills to questions and problems that matter to them.
